Clinical
My clinical interests are Menopause, Menstrual Disorders and impact of obesity in women. I see specialist referrals in the menopause from consultants locally, from outside Scotland and also advise colleagues on complex issues relating to the care of menopausal women.

Research
My interests cover vascular biology particularly in older women including the aetiology of hot flushing and impact of demographic factors and hormones on cardiovascular risk. I supervise PhD and MD students, review grants from all over the world and am on the Editorial Board of Climacteric. I am interested in Evidence-Based Medicine and am currently chairing my 2nd Guidelines Group for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Grant Funding
Vascular Biology: I have had grants from Wellbeing of Women, British Heart Foundation and Wellcome Trust. Current Grants include: A study to evaluate the value of Laser Doppler Iontophoresis as a Biomarker for vasomotor symptoms. Lumsden MA, Ferrell W, Sattar N. funded by the Translational Medicine Research Collaboration of Scotland and the Aetiology of Hot Flushing in Postmenopausal Women and Hypogonadal Men. Lumsden MA, Ferrell W, Wyper D, Pimlott S and Leung H. Funded by Wellbeing of Women (total £300,000).
Clinical Trials: Current grants totalling £2 million cover investigation and treatment of menstrual disorders and the impact of age and demographic factors on these problems

Publications
5 Books including 2 specifically in the Menopause and 1 for patients. 34 book chapters in specialist books and major text books and over 100 full peer-reviewed papers, 21 invited reviews that include mechanism of hot flushes, vascular biology and metabolism. Member of guidelines groups for BMS and participated in IMS Global Summits in Zurich [2008] and Pisa [2009]. I have given over 130 invited presentations throughout the world with ‘Keynote Lectures’ in countries as diverse as India, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Canada, USA and Australia.

International Activity
I am the International Lead for medicine and science in Glasgow, co-ordinating and developing strategies for research and postgraduate education and looking after the 261 overseas students present in our College in the University of Glasgow. I am involved in Postgraduate Education within the University, nationally and at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Examining
I have been External Examiner for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and PhD examining in Universities of Kuwait, Dublin, Malaya and, Sweden

My vision
Through my growing links with overseas countries that have come through my involvement with the University’s international agenda as well as the BMS, I am keen to help raise the profile of older women’s health particularly in the developing world. This will come through collaborative research, delivering lectures and meeting healthcare professionals working in this field.
