Antonio Cano MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valencia, Spain, in 1978. His educational period (1979-1984) included his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Hospital Santa Creu I Sant Pau, in Barcelona, ​​​​and the Virgen de Arrixaca University Hospital in Murcia, both in Spain). In this period he completed his Magna Cum Laude doctoral thesis, which was fully supported by a scholarship from Saint Clement Spanish College, University of Bologna, Italy.

In 1984 he obtained a postdoctoral fellowship from the British Council-Spanish Ministry of Education at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London, UK. He investigated (1984-1986) on the development of specific monoclonal antibodies against estrogen receptors, as well as in the design of immunological methods to measure receptor concentration and histological distribution in target tissues.

AC joined the Faculty of the Department of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Valencia, Spain, in 1987 as assistant professor. He was promoted to the rank of full-time tenured Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the same Department in 2006. In this capacity he has maintained responsibilities in the Clinico University Hospital, firstly as Head of the section of Gynecology (1988-2009) and then as Chairman (2009-2024) of the clinical Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His interest in gynecological endocrinology led him to be pioneer in setting a pioneering outpatient clinic on menopause in 1988, then converted into a wide section focused on women’s health.

As activities in scientific societies, he is former President of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Valencian Community (2018-2021). He was a member of the Board of Directors and then President of the European Menopause and Andropause Society (2019-2021). He is currently co-chair of the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies (CAMS) and a member of the IMS Education Committee. He is also the Executive Secretary of the International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology (ISGE).

His scientific production has consisted of several books, one on SERMs, which has been a compendium used by researchers and scholars, and another on Menopause, now in the second edition. He has published around 300 articles in high-impact journals, has been cited more than 14,000 times and his Google Scholar H-index is 66.

He serves on the editorial boards of several women’s health journals, such as Climacteric (associate editor), Maturitas (senior editorial advisor), European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology (gynecology editor), Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation (associate editor) and member of the editorial board of Gynecological Endocrinology and of Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Metabolism.

His area of ​​research has been the action of steroids in reproductive tissues, later extended to the hormonal regulation of the vasculature and bone cells, with relevance in cardiovascular disease in women and in osteoporosis. He has incorporated frailty as an innovative research topic, related to menopause and with relevance to the healthy aging of women. In coordination with several European academic and research centers, he has investigated the role of healthy lifestyle as an effective strategy to manage frailty and has explored the help provided by modern information and communication technologies.
